Covid clawback: State received unexpected €40m back in pandemic wage subsidies in 2024
The Department of Welfare unexpectedly recouped over €40 million more than expected in overpayments last year from two temporary pandemic-era wage subsidy schemes clawed back by the Revenue Commissioners. The data is included in the Comptroller & Auditor General’s (C&AG) 1,400-plus page report on the State’s accounts in 2024. According to the analysis of department accounts for last year, it was expected to recover just €2.5 million from the Temporary Wage Subsidy Scheme (TWSS) and €5 million from its replacement, the Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme (EWSS).
