The decision to sell PTSB is essentially a Government move. As Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe holds a majority 57.4 per cent stake in the country’s third-largest bank, he had a choice between gradually releasing those shares on the market – a slow process so as not to crash their price, as seen with AIB – or selling this controlling stake in one go. The wholesale disposal option, announced on the back of positive third-quarter results on Thursday, makes sense.
